A fan of our show, who is a nurse, noticed a lump on my throat and was concerned that my thyroid was swollen. She took action and, as a result, I was able to get a diagnosis and undergo surgery for thyroid cancer. Pretty crazy, right?

Now, you’re probably wondering why I’m talking about my cancer scare, and what it has to do with the things every house-flipper should do every day. Well, going through cancer surgery and treatment taught me a lot about how I was living my life, what I was working for and a few changes I needed to make, so I could keep living a healthy life while working with Christina and growing our house-flipping business. I’ve been thinking a lot about the changes I’ve made to my life since then, how they’ve helped our business and how they can help others balance their lives without giving up on their dreams.

Don’t Ignore Your Health

First of all, this one seems like it should be obvious, but it’s a big deal that a lot of people ignore. If you notice something unusual about your health, don’t ignore it. I thought that the lump on my throat was just a fatty deposit, and I completely ignored it. At the same time, for about three years, I’d been having throat problems, but I ignored those, too.

When I think back on it, those two things should have been huge red flags for me, and I should’ve gone to a doctor way sooner than I did. Instead, I just kept putting it off, and I know that a lot of you may do the same. Don’t. Seriously, if you think that you have a problem with your health, go to a doctor and get it checked out. Don’t wait to see if it gets better on its own, even if you don’t think you have the time for a doctor’s visit.

Every morning, evaluate how you’re feeling. If something’s not right, keep an eye on it and get it checked out. You might think that a doctor’s visit or treatment will knock you out of the game for a while, but think of what it’ll do to your business if you get really sick and can’t work.

Wait to Check Your Email

Now that I’ve talked a bunch about your health and how important it is, here’s a smaller habit that helps reduce stress and maintain productivity. Don’t check your email as soon as you open your eyes in the morning. Wait until you’ve made your coffee and breakfast. Then, as you sit down to plan your day, you can do a quick check to make sure there’s nothing pressing that needs to be addressed right away, and if not, take this time to mentally prepare for the day. This will help you avoid feeling stressed first thing in the morning.

Focus on One Thing at a Time

Finally, multi-tasking is really overrated. The only way that Christina and I get more than one thing done at a time is by splitting things up and delegating. That way, we can each focus on one thing at a time and make sure that we’re doing a good job of at all of our tasks. If I’m checking the MLS, I’m not also answering emails or calling motivated sellers. Doing that will divide my attention and make me less effective at both tasks, so I work on one thing at a time, and I end up getting more done.

Keep these three things in mind every day, and you’ll be more productive and have a more balanced life. You also won’t miss out on important health concerns like I did. Good luck!
