When you work a 9:00–5:00 job, work-life balance is probably the most important thing in the world, especially if you’re not in love with what you do. Basically, you have to make sure that you don’t spend so much time at work that you burn out, causing your mental and physical health to suffer. Maintaining a good work-life balance takes on a different meaning when you start a real estate business from home. When you start using financial freedom strategies like flipping houses and investing in real estate opportunities, suddenly you’re living a whole different kind of life.
When you work from home and your job involves the kind of fun design work that Christina and I love, along with seeing really amazing results for property rehabs and the looks on buyers’ faces when they see their new homes, your job stops feeling like “work” and starts feeling a whole lot more like a fun project. So how important is a good work-life balance when you love your work this much? Actually, it’s still really important.
Avoid Burning Out
First of all, while the work that Christina and I do to find leads, get funding, rehab houses, and sell them is a lot of fun, it’s also pretty intense sometimes. We do a lot of front-end work when we find deals on flips. Then, as you know if you’ve seen even a single episode of Flip or Flop, we handle some pretty stressful situations on the job.
Can you imagine finding out that you need to rewire a whole house after you’re already pretty much guaranteed to go over budget on a rehab? In this business, that kind of thing happens more often than I like to think about, but when we keep our heads on our shoulders and make the right compromises, things almost always work out in our favor.
If I didn’t make time for daddy-daughter days with Taylor, date nights with Christina, time with our baby son Brayden, or the occasional afternoon to just veg out in front of a football game on TV, I don’t know what I’d do. Basically, spending time with my family and friends and giving myself time to relax and unwind helps keep me in the game when we’re under pressure. If you don’t give yourself that time, you’re going to burn out. You’ll feel overwhelmed and stressed, and your fun job isn’t going to be much fun anymore.
Divide and Conquer
Fortunately, if you’re working with your spouse or a good business partner, you can split up the work involved with getting leads, making deals, and doing rehabs. When you work together, you can play off each other’s strengths and fortify each other’s weaknesses. And, best of all, you both have time for a great work-life balance. You can keep each other on task when it’s time to work, and you can remind each other when it’s time to clock out and spend some quality R&R time with your family and friends.
If you want to start a real estate business from home, you’re in for a lot of fun and a really rewarding career move. It’s honestly one of the best financial freedom strategies around, and it’s the best decision that Christina and I ever made for our careers and our family. The thing that makes it such a great decision, though, is that we make sure to prioritize our family time and maintain a really great work-life balance. That way, work stays interesting and fun, and we never miss out on the important moments with each other and our kids.
