As you might already know, Christina is a big fan of yoga and all things health and fitness. I’ve always been a pretty fit guy, but it wasn’t until I had a battle with thyroid cancer that I really started to appreciate my health. With the good fortune of a fan noticing the telltale lump on my throat, I was lucky enough to be able to get surgery and beat this really scary disease. The whole experience got me thinking about how I approach work, house flipping, and life in general, and I started doing a lot of reading on meditation and reflection.
It turns out that experts put a lot of stock in meditation for entrepreneurs and business owners, and it can really help you maintain focus and deal with stressful situations. But that’s not all. Here are just a few of the ways that taking up regular meditation has helped me improve my life and my approach to house flipping.
Handle Changing Situations More Smoothly
Change is hard, especially negative change, but in this business you have to deal with changing situations every day. How many times have you seen one of our general contractors or project managers tell me that we have to increase our rehab budget on a project on Flip or Flop? That’s the kind of change you don’t want to deal with, and it can be really stressful.
With regular meditation, you can learn to take a breath, step back, and reevaluate the situation and the changes you’re faced with. Then you can find the best solution without losing your cool.
Cut Down on Distractions
While meditation can’t cut down on the things in the world around you that distract you from your business, it can help you reduce distracting thoughts and stay focused. While you’re negotiating with a seller, showing a flip property to a potential buyer, or combing through the MLS for new leads, distracting thoughts can creep in and really hurt your business.
If you seem distracted and unfocused while talking with sellers and buyers, they’re not going to take you seriously. If you’re distracted while hunting down leads, you’re likely to miss some great deals. With daily meditation, you can focus your mind more easily and get rid of all of the distractions floating around in your head.
Get Better Sleep
Meditation is also great for helping you decompress and relax at the end of the day. Then, when you close your eyes at night, you’ll be less stressed and less worried, and you’ll be able to drift off to sleep more quickly. I’ve also found that, since I started meditating, I tend to sleep more deeply, and I don’t wake up in the middle of the night with a head full of anxious thoughts and worries.
Deal with Stress More Effectively
Whether you’re stressed about missing deadlines on a rehab project, not closing on a promising lead, or anything else in your house flipping business, meditation can help. While these stressors won’t go away when you close your eyes and meditate for a few minutes a day, that meditation time will help you learn to calm down and find better solutions.
Since I’ve been meditating, I’ve been enjoying house flipping a lot more, and I’ve had a lot less stress in my life. Being mindful of your problems and challenges and learning to focus your thoughts will do wonders for your business and help you see better ways to grow as a real estate investor.
